KEVIN DAVIS GETS IT...

As Police Juror:
Tammany Trace: In 1992, as a St. Tammany Parish police juror, Davis led the effort to purchase & convert unused rail lines into Louisiana’s first and only Rails-to-Trails conversion. The 31 mile Tammany Trace attracted 196,000 visitors in 2009. Davis testified before U.S. Congress regarding the cultural & economic impact of this project. The Trace continues to gather national awards for natural beauty, recreation and education.

Regional Planning Commission: Chairman of five parish region, 1992, 1996, 2001, 2006. The RPC promotes regional cooperation and planning for economic and quality of life projects.

Tammany Trace Trailheads: Beginning in 1992, additional trailheads have been built along the Tammany Trace in Abita Springs, Covington, Lacombe, Mandeville and Slidell. The trailheads host free concerts, art exhibits, sporting events and festivals.

Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge: In 1994, Davis worked with the federal government to create the 18,000 acre wildlife refuge in southern St. Tammany.

Access St. Tammany: In 1994, Davis wrote the ordinance to create government access television for St. Tammany Parish. The station now produces arts, recreational and tourism programming in addition to government meetings and emergency communications.
   
Decentralized Arts Funding: In 1995, 1996 and 1998, as strong supporter of Decentralized Arts Funding, Davis sat as a grants panelist and continues to advocate for this strong statewide program.

Northshore Harbor Center: In 1999, Davis arranged for the donation of 25 acres of land to build the 45,000 square foot multi-purpose events center along the I-10 corridor. The center serves as an economic engine hosting conventions, conferences, art & music events.

As Parish President:
Commission on Cultural Affairs: In 2000, Davis created the Commission on Cultural Affairs, the first such commission in parish history specifically tasked with supporting cultural and heritage projects.

Percent for Art Ordinance:
In 2002, St. Tammany Parish adopted its first Percent for Art ordinance, creating the framework for beautifying public spaces through art and landscape.

Ten Year Capital Infrastructure Plan:
In 2005, St. Tammany’s Ten Year Plan includes museums, trails and performing centers.

Kidz Konnection: In 2007, the Kidz Konnection playground is a fully handicapped accessible playground of over one acre where children of all abilities play alongside their friends and families. The Kidz Konnection was built with $500,000 in private donations and volunteer labor on parish-donated land. In 2009, over 100,000 children of all abilities used this playground.
    
Cultural Tourism Award: In 2007, St. Tammany Parish received the first Governor’s Award for Cultural Tourism through demonstrated partnerships among the tourism and arts commissions, and private partners.

Community Cultural Plan: In 2007, recognizing the need for post Katrina needs assessment and strategic planning, Davis and the Commission on Cultural Affairs completed a community cultural plan to guide the cultural economy .

Children’s Museum:
In 2009, a ceremonial groundbreaking was held for a new $12 million Children’s Museum on 11 acres. The 20,000 square foot facility is a cooperative partnership with the Junior League of Greater Covington and many other local agencies.
Future phases include a 1,000 seat amphitheatre and a visual arts center.

Cultural Economy Award: In 2009, Davis was honored with a Cultural Economy Award from the Lt. Governor for work developing business skills and partnerships among artists, artisans and the business community.

Camp Salmen Nature Park:
In 2010, working through the Trust for Public Land, Davis saved 100+ acres of lives oaks, pine savannah and historic structures from commercial development and created a recreational area on beautiful Bayou Liberty. The park opens to the public in 2010.

Twin Spans Fishing Pier & Fish Habitat:
In 2010, Davis arranged for sections of the old Twin Span bridges over Lake Pontchartrain to be converted into a pubic fishing pier.
